Laboratory Assistant

Salary range up to £25,000 per annum depending on experience.

An exciting opportunity is available for an enthusiastic and organised Laboratory Assistant to support the Wellcome Genome Campus Advanced Courses and Scientific Conferences programme.

You will work closely with the Laboratory Manager and Assistant Laboratory Manager to support lab set up for each course including purchasing of reagents/consumables, preparing reagents, tissue culture, and support for general maintenance of laboratory equipment. You will also assist with the production of course material such as manuals and be involved in writing risk assessments for laboratory practicals.

The role will also involve assisting with the laboratory preparations for overseas courses in Latin America, Africa and Asia, including purchasing and shipping of consumables and equipment and, after a training period, provide onsite support during the courses. You will attend course planning meetings and contribute to the writing of meeting minutes and assist in the scheduling, liaison and AV support for guest speakers.

Working with the Scientific Officer, you will also support marketing activities for the laboratory courses, including use of print, online, email and social media platforms.

This interesting and varied role is an exciting opportunity for a highly motivated, flexible and responsible individual. You will need the ability to multi task and be involved in more than one project at a time, whilst meeting tight deadlines. The successful candidate will need to be able to work flexible hours (including some evenings and weekends) with the potential for some overseas travel.

Essential Skills
Life Sciences degree or equivalent experience
Previous laboratory experience including good laboratory practise
Effective team worker
Effective communicator
Capable use of computers and ability to adapt to new packages
Knowledge of PC packages i.e. Excel, Word, internet usage
Good level of numeracy and literacy

Ideal Skills
Previous experience of tissue culture
Previous experience with basic molecular biology techniques (e.g. PCR, DNA, extraction, restriction enzyme digestion of DNA
Previous experience of marketing tools and resources
