Rebecca Twells

Head of Advanced Courses and Scientific Conferences

Rebecca Twells

Rebecca directs strategy, planning and development of the programme with a team of 13. Over 50 events in biomedicine are held each year at the Wellcome Genome Campus and in low and middle-income countries. Prior to this she was Head of Human Genetics at the University of Cambridge and a British Diabetes Association R.D. Lawrence Fellow. She has a PhD in molecular genetics from Imperial College London, and was a postdoctoral researcher at the University of Oxford.

Treasa Creavin

Treasa’s main role is to expand and develop the scientific conference programme and discussion-based courses. She is the scientific lead on a portfolio of courses and conferences. Her role also includes marketing events and securing commercial sponsorship. Prior to joining the conferences programme in 2010, she was the Editor of Trends in Genetics and the Reviews Editor of Genome Biology. Treasa obtained her PhD in genetics from University College London and was a postdoctoral researcher at UCL Medical School and at AIST in Japan.

Nicole Schatlowski

Scientific Programme Officer

Nicole Schatlowski

Nicole’s role is to manage the scientific aspects of conferences and develop new ideas to expand the conference programme portfolio. Before joining the team she worked as a Postdoc in Cambridge and Uppsala, Sweden. Nicole obtained a PhD in genetics from the University of Düsseldorf, Germany, focussing on plant epigenetic mechanisms.

Laura Hubbard

Conference and Events Manager

Laura Hubbard

Laura has worked with the scientific conferences team since August 2007, after graduating with a BA Hons degree in Event Management. Laura is responsible for the logistical organisation of up to 10 conferences, retreats, summer schools and workshops per year. In January 2015 Laura was appointed the conference and events manager.

Jemma Beard

Jemma Beard

Jemma has been a conference and events organiser since 2007. She is responsible for the logistical organisation of up to 10 events per year. Before joining the scientific conference team, she was the head receptionist at the Conference Centre at the Genome Campus.

Lucy Criddle

Conference and Events Organiser

Lucy Criddle

Lucy graduated from the University of Wolverhampton, with a degree in Hospitality Management. During her studies she spent one year working in Lapland with the Finnish Tourist Association. She previously worked at Cambridge University in the conference sales team, and has been working within scientific conferences team for the past 15 years as a conference and events organiser.

Zoey Willard

Conference and Events Organiser

Zoey Willard

Zoey has worked in event management since 1996 organising events in pharmaceutical, technology, finance, tobacco and economic development areas within large corporates, agencies and the public sector. Zoey has led more than 300 event projects in over 20 countries around the globe. She has a BA Hons degree in Geography from Royal Holloway, University of London.

Sarah Offord

Sarah Offord

Sarah joined the team in January 2018 to provide administrative support for the Scientific Conferences programme. After graduating from Manchester Metropolitan University with an MSc in Events Management, Sarah went on to work for agencies organising a wide range of events such as conferences, incentive trips and exhibitions across the UK and overseas.

Beccy Jones

Beccy Jones

Beccy worked as a Summer Placement Student over the last two years whilst completing her degree. Beccy joined the team as a Conference and Events Assistant in August 2018 after graduating from Leeds Beckett University with a BSc in Events Management.

Darren Hughes

Scientific Programme Manager

Darren Hughes

Darren joined the team in 2005 after returning from the US, where he worked first in research before moving into science communication. Prior to this, his research focused on fetomaternal immune disorders and he obtained a PhD in molecular immunohaematology from the University of Cambridge in 2002. Darren oversees the operational side of many of the UK and overseas courses as well as developing and marketing the courses programme.

Yvonne Thornton

Senior Administrator Manager

Yvonne Thornton

Yvonne has worked as an administrator within team since 2004. She is the first point of contact for all applicants to the campus-based Advanced Courses. She ensures that all arrangements are in place to enable the smooth running of the courses (including arranging catering, accommodation, and transport for delegates and instructors). Yvonne has a background in accounts; previously she spent 4 years working with the Wellcome Trust accounts department on Campus.

Julie Ormond

Laboratory Manager

Julie Ormond

Julie is the Laboratory Manager, a role she has held since 2000. Her key responsibilities are providing technical assistance for all lab courses, purchasing reagents and equipment, organising the laboratory set-up for each course and overseeing health and safety. She also plays a major role in co-ordinating and organising the overseas laboratory-based courses. Previously she spent 20 years doing research in the agrochemical industry.

Nicola Stevens

Nicola has been an Administrative Assistant since 2007. She has previously worked in the audit and risk management department of a large NHS Trust and prior to that worked in the banking industry for 13 years.

Kate Waite

Assistant Laboratory Manager

Kate Waite

Kate joined the team in 2013 after graduating with a BSc (Hons) degree in Zoology from Swansea University. Kate assists with organising the laboratory courses and is also responsible for guest speakers and coordinating feedback.

Pamela Black

Education Lead

Pamela Black

Pamela leads on education policy, provision, and pedagogy for the advanced courses programme. She leads and manages new educational initiatives such as the Advanced Learning and Training element of our advanced courses and the new online courses programme developed in Partnership with FutureLearn. Previously, Pamela held leadership roles in the NHS and in Higher Education: she was the Education Lead for the Public Health Genetics Unit, Cambridge, and an Open University Project Director and Lecturer in the Education and Science Faculties. Pamela has a PhD in Genetics Education from the University of Cambridge, a Masters in Educational Leadership and Management from the Open University, and a Post Graduate Certificate of Science Education from the University of Oxford. She is a Fellow of the Higher Education Academy.

Martin Aslett

IT Manager

Martin Aslett

Martin joined the team as Advanced Courses IT manager in March 2016. Prior to this, Martin worked in the Pathogen Informatics team at the Wellcome Trust Sanger Institute for 14 years, providing software support for both internal and external users. He has a BSc (Hons) degree in Zoology from Leeds University and an MSc in Biological Computation from York University.

Alice Matimba

Overseas Course Development Officer

Alice Matimba

Alice’s role is to coordinate and expand the ACSC Programme’s portfolio of overseas courses and to develop links with networks and centres in LMICs. Alice graduated with her PhD in Human Genetics from the University of Cape Town, South Africa. Thereafter, she pursued a pharmacogenomics postdoctoral research fellowship at the Mayo Clinic in USA before joining the University of Zimbabwe College of Health Sciences in 2012, where she focused on health education and research in non-communicable diseases, pharmacology, genomics and ethics.

Karon joined the Advanced Courses team in August 2017 having previously worked in an Independent School for 10 years. She has also worked in both the Medical and Banking Sectors.

Adam Crewdson

Laboratory Assistant

Adam Crewdson

Adam gained a Bsc (Hons) degree in Bioscience from the University of Leicester in 2016. He joined the team at the start of 2018 and his role includes assisting in the organisation and preparation of the laboratory courses.
